ABSTRACT
INFN-LNS (Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics) is a public research institute located in Catania (Italy) and devoted to studies in the field of nuclear, sub-nuclear and applied physics.
INFN-LNS has two particles accelerators producing ions in the 4 MeV - 100 MeV range, for nuclear studies, detector irradiations and medical applications (radiotherapy treatments of tumours).
At INFN-LNS, moreover, an activity related to the study of the proton-11B fusion reaction for medical and energetic applications is active since 2015.
This reaction is studied to both driven an enhance of the proton therapy efficacy and as a future possible field in inertial fusion facilities.
In this talk, the main achievements obtained in the field of the use of the p11B fusion reaction in proton therapy will be reported.
The talk will also present a just funded project, named FUSION (FUsion StudIes of prOton boron Neutronless reaction in laser-generated plasma), funded by INFN and dedicated to the study of the p11B fusion reaction in plasma for energy studies. FUSION will develop new targets and diagnostic systems for p11B studies, and will perform new experiments with the main goals to improve the p11B reaction rate and to measure the ions stopping power in a plasma at the energy of interest for inertial confinement.
