The 18th Kudowa Summer School “Towards Fusion Energy” is co-organized by the the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion in Poland and the COST Action PROBONO and will take place in Kudowa-Zdrój, Poland, from 8th to 12th June 2026.

The Kudowa Summer School is a biennial event which mission to provide high quality scientific lectures to students willing to start their careers in fusion and plasma physics research and attracts participants from many countries. It covers a variety of topics interesting for all students involved in plasma physics research:
BASIC PL
ASMA AND FUSION ENERGY • LASER PLASMA PHYSICS • MAGNETIC AND INERTIAL CONFINEMENT FUSION • TOKAMAKS, STELLARATORS AND Z-PINCHES • PROTON BORON FUSION AND APPLICATIONS • PLASMA DIAGNOSTICS AND TECHNOLOGY • SPACE PLASMA AND ELECTRIC PROPULSION
The plenary lectures given by well-known plasma physics scientists will be complemented with students' sessions. Students who are interested in giving a 15-minute talk can send a 1 page abstract on their research by 16th 30th March, 2026. If the number of student contributions exceeds the limit of available time-slots for the talks, a poster session will be arranged. A special prize is foreseen for the most remarkable contributor.
The fees for participation in the school, including full board and lodging, is 5000 PLN, while a reduced fee of 4500 PLN is applied for early bird registration, untill 23rd March 3rd April 2026.
A significant number of postgraduate students working on laser-driven plasmas or/and proton–boron fusion, will have the opportunity to receive financial support from the COST Action PROBONO to participate in the school.
MSc and PhD students affiliated to a COST eligible country* and working in the field of laser-driven plasmas or/and proton-boron fusion can request financial support from COST Action PROBONO. This can be done during the registration process on the School registration page. Applicants submitting the “School Student / Young Researcher Registration Form” should select “YES” in the “Presentation” field, choose the topic “Proton–boron fusion & laser-induced plasmas”, indicate their intention to apply for financial support, and upload their CV and motivation letter. The deadline for support requests is the 2nd of March,(EXTENDED to 9th 16th 30th of March) and the results of the selected grantees will be announced one week later. (* eligible trainee from: Full Member, Cooperating Member, Near Neighbour Country)
The 15 granted students will have a reduced fee (including full-board lodging), which will be fully reimbursed by the daily allowance support from COST Action for the full attendance of the school. In addition, they will receive a reimbursed amount of up to 400€ for long-distance travel expenses (>100 km) to/from the venue.
Please notice: reimbursement will be made after school ends, which means that participants will need to pay in advance to be reimbursed afterwards.
The granted students should apply to participate in the Working Group(s) of the COST Action ProBono (https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA21128) in order to receive the official invitation and be able to claim reimbursement. For more info contact Prof. Ioannis Fitilis
